06/06/2008 - San Francisco, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Baseball's home run king was back in court on Friday, as Barry Bonds again pleaded not guilty, this time to 15 refiled federal charges of lying to a grand jury.
The not guilty pleas were entered in an early morning hearing. At another session starting at 11 a.m. (pt) U.S. District Judge Susan Illston set a trial date of March 2, 2009. Bonds has been charged with 14 counts of lying to a grand jury and one count of obstruction that he denied knowingly taking illegal performance-enhancing drugs.
Bonds first entered a not guilty plea in December, but Illston delayed the case in March so government lawyers could correct technical flaws in the original indictment. At the time, prosecutors hit Bonds with a five-count indictment -- four counts of perjury and one for obstruction of justice -- after one of the longest federal grand jury investigations in Northern California history involving the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO).
However, Bonds' lawyers contended that under law the indictment was deficient because the government can accuse a person of only one crime per count of an indictment. Apparently, too many allegations were compiled into too few counts of the original indictment.
Each of the counts of lying carries a maximum of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine and up to three years of supervised release. Another count of obstruction could mean a maximum of 10 years imprisonment.
Bonds has been accused of lying under oath to a federal grand jury during his testimony, given under oath in December 2003. That is at the center of his November 15, 2007 indictment for perjury and obstruction of justice.
A seven-time MVP, eight-time Gold Glove winner, 14-time All-Star and two-time batting champion, Bonds owns seven single-season major league records, most notably a 73-home run season in 2001 with the Giants.
Bonds, who is a free agent, finished last season with 762 career home runs, with a career average of .298 in 22 seasons with Pittsburgh and San Francisco. He was released by the Giants during the offseason.

Pittsburgh earned their passage to the big game by beating their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, 23-14 in yesterday's AFC Championship Game. The Steelers jumped on Baltimore early, building a 13-0 first half lead, and never let up on their way to a fairly easy win. Although the Ravens did close to within two points in the fourth quarter, it never appeared as if they had enough offense to pull off the upset.
The Steelers dominating defense held Baltimore to a total of 198 yards while allowing them to convert just three third downs in 13 attempts. Pittsburgh also forced quarterback Joe Flacco into three interceptions, one of which safety Troy Polamalu returned fourty yards for a touchdown.
The Cardinals, by far the playoff team with the longest odds to reach Super Bowl XLIII, did so yesterday with a 32-25 upset of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship. Arizona charged out of the gates and built a 24-6 halftime lead that had the Eagles venerable defense reeling. Quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald did most of the damage, connecting on three first half touchdowns.
Arizona, however, could not sustain their momentum and the Eagles took a 25-24 with 10:45 left to play in the fourth. The Cardinals, with the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance, mounted a fourteen play, 72 yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:52 off the clock. Warner hit running back Tim Hightower on a short screen for the go-ahead, game clinching score that will forever live in Cardinal infamy.
MySportsbook.com's Super Bowl XLIII Betting Odds:
Pittsburgh Steelers -6.5 (-110), Over 46.5 (-110), -260 (Money line)
